Costain is committed to operating a fully competent workforce, which is an essential component of our BE SAFE strategy.

In 2009 we introduced our Competence Card Compliance Policy, which outlines the process for verifying competence on our sites and in our offices though the mechanism of an externally validated competency card. This policy outlines our expectation that all employees and sub contractors must be able to demonstrate competence in appropriate management, supervisory or technical skills and health and safety matters. The policy is enforced through inclusion in our annual Performance Management Process and through regular internal and external audit.

Costain employees are all assessed against the Costain core Behavioural Competencies as part of the annual performance management process. This includes our Health Safety and Environment competence. All job roles have a target level and we support our employees and supply chain in achieving the required level of competence through our comprehensive training and development programme and the implementation of our Group Safety, Health and Environment Training Matrix.
